Big Picture
The very first Carnegie International exhibition opened in 1896 under the directorship of John W. Beatty. Modeled after the Venice Biennale founded a year earlier, Pittsburgh’s exhibition of contemporary art featured 5,310 paintings from artists in the United States and Europe in its first 18 years, which were displayed in densely hung salons like the one seen here.
