Appalachia’s native plants are being threatened by invasive species and Carnegie Museum of Natural History wants to do something about it. Thanks to a $225,000 grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation, the museum is spearheading educational outreach initiatives in partnership with Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania, Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, Pittsburgh Botanic Garden, and other organizations.
Space Innovation on the North Side

A new Space and Defense Innovation District that includes Carnegie Science Center is forming on Pittsburgh’s North Side. A “master visioning process” led by the Keystone Space Collaborative, a nonprofit organization that advocates for the tri-state region’s space industry, is now under way. Other key contributors include the space robotics company Astrobotic and real estate investment firm Mirasol Capital.

Props for the Sound Series

The Andy Warhol Museum is looking to harness support for its Sound Series concert events with a crowdfunding campaign launched in August. Contributors will receive a piece of merchandise printed by Commonwealth Press—signed posters, tote bags, stickers—with a unique design by Makenzie Sing.
Calling All Artists

In June, Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh announced it is sponsoring an Inclusive Call for Diverse Art. The “Envisioning A Just Pittsburgh” initiative, also sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, is seeking submissions from southwestern Pennsylvania residents that share visions for a just and equitable Pittsburgh. Submissions can include visual art, writing, or performance, a selection of which will be featured in a showcase in early 2024.
