Carnegie Magazine Wins 5 Golden Quill Awards
The Press Club of Western Pennsylvania honors Carnegie magazine at its annual celebration of the region’s best journalism.
Carnegie magazine emerged as a big winner at the 61st annual Golden Quill Awards, earning top prize in every category for which it was nominated at the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania’s annual celebration of the region’s best journalism.
The magazine’s Spring 2024 cover story “Honoring the Dead and the Living” claimed two awards, in the categories of News Feature and History/Culture. That story about Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s efforts to repatriate human remains was called “a considerate and thorough inside look at museum accountability work” by one judge, with another describing it as “so engrossing, that I stopped paying attention to the elements of journalism and storytelling and got sucked into the narrative.”
In the Art/Entertainment category—in which the magazine had three of the four finalists—”Living artwork” about The Andy Warhol Museum’s efforts to conserve the Oxidation paintings emerged with the top prize. One judge called it a “great read … that had me glued to the page.” The feature “Creating belonging through art” about Carnegie Museum of Art’s Neighborhood Museum program, which aims to establish the museum as a welcoming place for refugees, took the top honor in the Traditional Feature category, with one judge praising it as a “piece that shows ‘light’ doesn’t mean unimportant.”
A story called “The dinosaur that changed the world,” about the 125th birthday of the iconic Diplodocus that brought international attention to the Natural History Museum, took home the prize in the Science/Environment category. It was lauded as a “wonderfully researched and written piece that brings to life a fascinating scientific history.”
