The Polymita picta, also known as the Cuban painted snail, was recently crowned Mollusk of the Year for 2022 by the Senckenberg Nature Research Society, the LOEWE Centre for Translational Biodiversity Genomics, and Unitas Malacologica. These colorful snails, part of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History collection, are 2- to 3-centimeters long and known for the variations of their shells. They are also male and female at the same time, without being able to fertilize themselves.
