Carnegie Museums provides opportunities for students and emerging professionals to learn about museum practice, gain professional skills, and explore career pathways in a variety of fields through immersive experiential engagement. Limited paid internships, academic externships, and other experiential learning opportunities are available at all four museums. Some intern positions may require at least one year of college or professional experience. Internships are posted throughout the year as they become available.
Paid Internships at the Museums
Below is a list of available internships and other paid experiential opportunities coordinated by the Volunteer & Internship Office at Carnegie Museums. If listed as a Federal Work-Study opportunity, applicants must qualify for the Federal Community Service Learning Program or Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program through FAFSA and their academic institution’s financial aid office. Please include proof of work-study award eligibility with application materials.

Are you a current University of Pittsburgh or Carnegie Mellon University undergraduate looking for an internship? Do you qualify for an Experiential Learning (EL) grant, internship opportunity funding, or the FCSWS Federal Work Study program? 3. Carnegie Museum of Art – Department of Conservation, Summer 2026

- Number of positions: The department is currently seeking applications for two (2) graduate student internships: one in Objects Conservation and one in Paintings Conservation.
- Location: Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh (Oakland), 4400 Forbes Ave, Pittsburgh PA, 15213
- Internship Duration: September 2026 – August 2027
- Internship Stipend: $19,200 USD
- Eligible candidates must be currently enrolled in a recognized graduate art conservation training program and be eligible to work in the United States. Successful candidates must: have a strong understanding of conservation principles and practices; demonstrate the ability to examine, propose, and execute conservation treatments based on consideration of an object’s aesthetic, historic, cultural, scientific and/or religious values; the ability to perform thorough written and photographic documentation of all examinations, analytical reports, and treatments with proficiency in English; and, preferably, possess a strong familiarity in digital-born documentation methods and database systems.
