St. Petersburg: The Russia of the Tsars

The group at The Hermitage Museum General Staff Building.

“From the tsars’ palaces to ballet and opera performances, to backstairs tours of the Hermitage and the Mariinsky Theater, the Carnegie put together an unforgettable experience of a city many of us had long dreamed of visiting. We returned home with after-images of astounding art, architecture, and design that have filled in our understanding of history and forever widened our perspective on the world.”

In July, Carnegie Museums travelers journeyed to the Russian imperial city of St. Petersburg. Boasting more than 300 bridges and often referred to as “the Venice of the North,” Saint Petersburg is an enduring testament to the golden age of Russia. Travelers stayed at the renowned, 5-star Belmond Grand Hotel Europe, once popular with the tsars. Visits included a private tour of the rarely-seen storage facility of the State Hermitage Museum, the newly opened Fabergé Museum, as well as private tours of the Catherine Palace (once used as a summer residence of the Russian tsars) and the palace of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich. Patrons were treated to a special backstage tour of the Mariinsky Theatre followed by an exceptional performance of Raymonda with Mariinsky prima ballerina Ulyana Lopatkina.
