Summer 2008

Thank You For All You Make Possible

Without a doubt, 2007 was a landmark year for Carnegie Museums. The opening of Dinosaurs in Their Time, the largest capital project funded through our recently completed Building the Future campaign, revealed to the world the true splendor and scientific importance of Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s fossil collection. And it once again reminded our audiences, at home and abroad, of the important role Carnegie Museums continues to play as an ever-changing, ever-alive cultural and educational institution.

But dinosaurs weren’t the only important news last year. We ended our incredibly successful Building the Future campaign with $161 million raised—$11 million above goal. (A summary of the campaign, titled “6,900 THANK YOUs,” was mailed with this issue of CARNEGIE magazine.) Powdermill Nature Reserve completed its long-awaited expansion, as did Hillman Hall of Minerals & Gems. BODIES … The Exhibition opened at Carnegie Science Center, and subsequently attracted more than 250,000 visitors through its closing weekend in May 2008. The Warhol continued its role as Andy Warhol’s ambassador to the world, organizing traveling exhibitions in a number of domestic and international locations, including Seoul, South Korea and Brisbane, Australia. And Carnegie Museum of Art made ready for Life on Mars, the 55th installation of the Carnegie International, which opened May 2 of this year with spectacular aplomb.

The International is not only a signature art event but a signature Carnegie Museums happening. Established in 1896, it was Andrew Carnegie’s stake in the ground for what he wanted his institution to be: curious, daring, a leader in exploration, and the very best in the world. Thankfully, enlightened leaders of our community still have that vision for Carnegie Museums today.

Milt Fine, Carnegie Museums Trustee Emeritus, is one such leader. His gift of $5 million, on behalf of The Fine Foundation, is the largest ever made in support of the Carnegie International. In addition to supporting the exhibition for many years to come, the gift established the Fine Prize for emerging artists, given for the first time this May to Thai artist Apichatpong Weerasethakul.

Earlier this year, The Fine Foundation made additional gifts in support of the arts: an endowment of $1.5 million to   create the Milton Fine Curator position at The Andy Warhol Museum, and a grant of $150,000 for the Carnegie International Young Audiences Engagement Project, which is exposing more local teens to the International through onsite and online experiences. Our sincere thanks to Milt and Sheila Fine and The Fine Foundation for their visionary support, and for serving as true examples of thoughtful giving.

Others who have given so generously of their time and energy over the past year are the members of our 2007 Leadership Team:
Chris Carson, chair of the Individual Gifts Committee
Debbie Dick, chair of the Annual Fund
Hugh Van der Veer, chair of the Corporate Committee
Lee Foster, chair of the Building the Future Campaign

Throughout the pages of this special salute to 2007 donors and volunteer leaders, you will read the names of still others who said “yes” to supporting Carnegie Museums last year, contributing to a total of $6.6 million in gifts and memberships. These operating dollars sustain, strengthen, and empower our four museums as they bring exhibitions to Pittsburgh that only Carnegie Museums could bring; help educate hundreds of thousands school children each year; and make  dreamers and explorers of all of us.

On behalf of the staff and trustees of Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, as well as the 1.4 million people we reached in 2007, we thank the donors, members, and volunteers who continue to support the wonderful work of our museums.

“The museums have a tremendous impact on the community.”

– Chip Burke

Chip Burke and Gregg Behr
When leading organizations come together to create great educational experiences for children, the results can be out of this world.

The Grable Foundation has long been a partner in education with Carnegie Museums. In 2003, the foundation donated $1 million to Carnegie Science Center to help provide families with broad access to science education. Last year, Grable provided funding for projects at all four museums, including arts education at The Warhol and Carnegie Museum of Art, and Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s new Dinosaurs in Their Time exhibit. And in early 2008, the Science Center announced that the foundation had generously committed $1 million in support of roboworld, a new permanent exhibit opening in 2009 that will be dedicated to
the science behind robotics and automation technology.

“We feel very confident about funding roboworld,” says Gregg Behr, executive director of the Grable Foundation. “The Science Center has demonstrated itself to be an exceptional presenter of high-quality exhibits that are equally matched with critical educational components.”

Behr believes the success of Robotics, the Science Center’s first exhibit about all-things-robotic, which has now traveled to 30 other cities, has “prepared the center to develop a world-class exhibit that complements the robust technological industry that is flourishing in Pittsburgh.”

“We’ve been proud of everything we’ve funded throughout the whole Carnegie system,” adds Charles “Chip” Burke, Jr., chairman of the Grable Foundation and a Science Center
board member. “The museums have a tremendous impact on the community. With access to top-notch resources and educators, they’re able to create enriching opportunities for children. Each museum builds upon a center of excellence, finding creative ways to build partnerships and present relevant and thoughtful programming that connects people to formal learning experiences.”

“Carnegie Museums as a whole has helped me redefine my relationship with Pittsburgh by giving me opportunities to meet new people and learn new things about my environment.”

– Phil Gulley

Some people love surprises, and Joan and Phil Gulley are two such people. As long-term members of Carnegie Museums, they continue to be surprised and delighted by what the four museums have to offer. “We always look forward to what’s coming next,” says Joan, executive vice president of PNC Bank. “It’s amazing how all of the exhibitions, from the big blockbusters to the little jewels, allow us to immerse ourselves in experiences we never could have imagined.”

Phil, who left the corporate world to volunteer at a therapeutic preschool for abused children, appreciates the willingness of the museums to present controversial topics. “An exhibition like BODIES helps me redefine my relationship with myself,”
he says, “and Carnegie Museums as a whole has helped me redefine my relationship with Pittsburgh by giving me opportunities to meet new people and learn new things about my environment.”

The couple recently made a significant donation to support Dinosaurs In Their Time, the blockbuster dinosaur exhibit at Carnegie Museum of Natural History, and it was partially matched by PNC through an employee matching funds program. “An exhibition like this one is where our money makes the most sense because it represents what is so unique about Pittsburgh,” says Joan. “We have treasures here that transport us and open up whole new worlds. People take them for granted, but we need to make an investment to keep and preserve them as a way of life.”

“It’s an investment in the people as much as the community,” adds Phil. “The museums are part of the fabric of my life, and I want them to continue.”

“Carnegie Museums’ world-class programs give Pittsburgh an amazing amount of sophistication for a city of its size.”

– Ellen Lehman

Charles Kennel and Ellen Lehman
Ellen Lehman’s ties to Carnegie Museums are of historic proportions, stretching back to the late 1920s, when her paternal grandfather, Albert Lehman, awarded a purchaser’s prize at the Carnegie International, and acquired award-winning pieces that are still in the family today. “When you see something through receptive eyes, it changes people, and that change is important,” says Ellen. “Andrew Carnegie saw that. My grandparents saw it, my parents saw it…and I am still seeing it.”

Ellen, a psychologist and psychoanalyst in private practice, and her husband, Charles Kennel, now live in La Jolla, California. Ellen’s parents, Jane and Alan G. Lehman, were devoted patrons of Carnegie Museum of Art. Jane was a longtime Carnegie Museums’ trustee, Carnegie Museum of Art board member, and former president and longtime member of the museum’s Women’s Committee.

Ellen recently contributed $3 million to Carnegie Museums’ Building the Future campaign, through the Alan G. and Jane A. Lehman Foundation, to be used to create two endowments of $1.5 million each. One endowment will establish the Alan G. and Jane A. Lehman Curator of Decorative Arts position, the first endowed curatorship at Carnegie Museum of Art, and the other will support the purchase of paintings and sculptures made prior to 1970 and decorative works of art for the Museum of Art’s collection.

“This is really my father’s gift,” says Ellen. “I support Carnegie Museum of Art because of my parents’ involvement and their deep commitment to the museum. Carnegie Museums’ world- class programs give Pittsburgh an amazing amount of sophistication for a city of its size.”

“The Science Center does an excellent job of being a launching pad, and instills a tremendous motivation for young people to form an appreciation of science.”

– Don Jones
Don Jones with Jo Haas, Henry Buhl, Jr., Director of Carnegie Science Center
Don Jones with Jo Haas, Henry Buhl, Jr., Director of Carnegie Science Center
Don Jones is the quintessential ideas guy, and he holds at least 15 patents to prove it. As a nationally recognized entrepreneur and investor with decades of experience growing start-up technology companies, Don equates success with positively differentiating yourself from the pack. That’s why he’s been drawn to support Carnegie Science Center’s upcoming robotics and automation technology exhibit.

“The museums should look at ways to become lightning rods for visitors,” says Don. roboworld is an outstanding example of that. Pittsburgh is a leading hub of technological development, and having a cutting-edge robotics exhibit at the Science Center will amplify our strengths and make Pittsburgh a beacon.” Scheduled to open in 2009, roboworld is a collaborative effort with the best robotic minds in the region.

“The Science Center serves a very useful purpose in our region, and we are proud to support it,” says Don. He and his wife, Barbara, have been supporters of the Science Center since 1990, a year before its opening.

“Our country is so in need of the best and brightest of our next generation to move into technology careers,” says Don, who is managing director of Draper Triangle, a venture capital firm that supports high-technology start-up companies, and chair of the roboworld Advisory Committee. “Through its exhibits, the Science Center does an excellent job of being a launching pad, and instills a tremendous motivation for young people to form an appreciation of science.

“Carnegie Museums should always strive to be number one in the whole country. They’ve been carrying that banner for many years, and they will continue to hold it high.”

Jim McDonald (right), with Richard Armstrong, The Henry J. Heinz II Director, Carnegie Museum of Art

“It’s vital for residents to acknowledge how important the museums have been in their lives.”

– Jim McDonald
When “global positioning” is the topic, the Carnegie International puts Pittsburgh squarely on
the cultural map. And that’s exactly what inspired The Bank of New York Mellon’s support of this important regional staple. “The International reflects our global reach as a company,” says Jim McDonald, director of philanthropy for the leading asset management and securities services company, which recently underwrote Life on Mars, the 2008 Carnegie International Gala. “This very significant and renowned exhibition dovetails around one of the focus areas of our philanthropic philosophy, supporting initiatives that provide access to arts and education. It is a gift to the region.”

As a long-time corporate sponsor of all four Carnegie Museums, BNY Mellon bases its history of support on world-class programming that serves a very diverse audience and is a key driver for cultural tourism. “We recognize that all four museums serve as premier public venues for visual arts, history, and technology for western Pennsylvania and beyond,” says Jim. “They are important cultural assets. It’s vital for residents to acknowledge how important the museums have been in their lives.”

Jim points, specifically, to ways the museums invigorate the local community by presenting exhibitions that challenge us to think about our place in the world. “The BODIES exhibition
at the Science Center was a tremendous learning opportunity,” he says. “All of the museums excel at continuing to educate us and provide experiences we may not otherwise have the opportunity to encounter.”

BNY Mellon’s sponsorship benefits its 6,500 local employees, too, and encourages other area businesses to support the museums through a corporate member challenge. “Our new philanthropic structure is based on improving the communities where the company does business, and our employees live and work,” says Jim. “It’s our way of leading by example.”

“We’re blessed to have a tremendous amount of culture in this city, and Carnegie Museums is right at the top.”

– Barbara Bott

Barbara Bott and Bob Jennings
Barbara Bott and Bob Jennings
Barbara Bott and Bob Jennings are active world travelers with memorable journeys launched at Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh. Their first museum-led trip was to Spain in 2002. “We spent hours in a palazzo talking with a retired ambassador to the European Union. Where in the world would you get that chance?” says Bob. “Our travels with the Carnegie always include side trips where we connect with interesting local people.”

Before moving to Allison Park from Maryland in 1981, the couple spent time at the Smithsonian, and have discovered the same kind of magic at Carnegie Museums. “We’ve always enjoyed arts, culture, and travel,” says Barbara. “And we’ve fallen in love with  Carnegie Museums as one of our community’s jewels of a resource. Kids can let their imaginations run wild and expand their intellectual curiosity to the broader world around them. We’re blessed to have a tremendous amount of culture in this city, and Carnegie Museums is right at the top.”

As a former biology teacher and one-time physics major respectively, Barbara and Bob share a passion for science and are avid supporters of the many scientists who make up the world-renowned staff of the museums. “These fascinating people are completely devoted to their topics,” says Bob, a semi-retired attorney who relishes the opportunity to interact with great minds. “As donors, we get invited to special events where we can exchange ideas with museum curators.”

“Carnegie Museums is a fabulous institution that opens entire vistas of appreciation and the desire to learn more,” continues Bob. “It’s very important to sustain that kind of opportunity and make it available to everyone.”

Randy Dearth and Tom Sokolowski, Director of The Andy Warhol Museum
Randy Dearth and Tom Sokolowski, Director of The Andy Warhol Museum

“I can’t believe more Pittsburgh businesses don’t take advantage of The Warhol for events. It’s an amazing, creative, and vibrant space.”

– Randy Dearth
“Defining, and then achieving success” were Randy Dearth’s first orders of business as the new board chair of The Andy Warhol Museum. “It’s important to the board, and critical to my role, to define what success means for The Warhol and then implement a solid plan to get there,” says Randy, president and chief executive officer of LANXESS Corporation.

This business-first approach stems from Randy’s perspective on Andy Warhol himself. “He was a successful businessman and entrepreneur,” he explains. “We’re looking at the lessons we can learn from Warhol as a metaphor, such as ways to break away from the status quo.”

Randy feels that, at its core, the museum’s function is to showcase and celebrate the genius of Warhol’s work, as well as highlight other innovative artists. However, having The Warhol become the beacon of Pittsburgh creativity would certainly fulfill a long-term goal many have had for the museum since its inception. “Everyone who works at The Warhol does so out of a true passion for art,” Randy notes. “From the people who greet you at the door to the director, Tom Sokolowski, every person involved is there due to a creative calling.” Randy also feels that many local residents and businesses under-utilize the museum, “I can’t believe more Pittsburgh businesses don’t take advantage of The Warhol for events. It’s an amazing, creative, and vibrant space.”

Randy also notes, with pride, that Warhol’s art and the museum’s packaging of that art through creative traveling exhibitions have become extraordinarily popular around the world—another measure of The Warhol’s success, for sure. “People here need to recognize that The Andy Warhol Museum is a wonderful asset for Pittsburgh and that it’s worthy of their support.”

“The museums play an unbelievable role in the culture and education of our youth. They’re a significant force.”

– Milt Washington
altMilt and Nancy Washington
Milt and Nancy Washington
For Nancy and Milton Washington, being involved with Carnegie Museum of Art is a way of life. The couple traces their passion for the museum back to the ’70s, when Nancy joined the Museum of Art’s Women’s Committee, and it’s never waned. “It’s a dynamic institution,” explains Nancy, a retired educator. “Visually and programmatically, it’s always fresh.”

Milt, a businessman as well as a board member of the Museum of Art and a lifetime trustee of Carnegie Museums, believes that the museums’ focus on making art, science, and natural history accessible has a significant impact on the city. “The museums play an unbelievable role in the culture and education of our youth. They’re a significant force.” He recalls leaving a recent museum meeting and encountering hundreds of children. “They were noisy and vibrant. It was very impressive to see not just the large number of kids, but the diversity among them.”

“There’s something of a trend today for people to collect art and to hold private exhibits exclusively for their friends,” adds Nancy. “In contrast, the Museum of Art allows everyone to see great art, whether it’s the permanent collection or the Carnegie International.” The Washingtons are longtime supporters, most recently making a generous pledge in support of the Scaife Galleries. Milton explains, “This institution is so significant. Without support from the public, the museum couldn’t continue to have the quality of product and people, or the far-reaching influence that it currently has.”

Betty Gamble with Dave Smith, Director of
Powdermill Nature Reserve

“I like what Powdermill
stands for … They are
very good about educating
young people to care
for and appreciate our
surrounding streams, trees,
and wildlife.”

– Betty Gamble
As a girl, Elizabeth “Betty” Gamble learned to respect nature from her beloved father, Walter Carlyle Shaw, a co-founder of G. C. Murphy. “I idolized my father. He made me recognize the beauty and importance of nature, especially trees, flowers, and animals,” says Betty. “Through him, I learned to appreciate and protect the environment when I was very young.”

Today, Betty especially appreciates the work of Powdermill Nature Reserve, Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s sprawling biological field station and a nationally-recognized center for avian research. She and her husband, Guy Paden Gamble, are loyal supporters of Powdermill, which is located in the Laurel Highlands about 30 miles from the Gambles’ 230-acre, wooded property. “I like what Powdermill stands for and I like the classes they offer,” says Betty. “They are very good about educating young people to care for and appreciate our surrounding streams, trees, and wildlife.”

When Powdermill made public its plans for a new 10,000- square-foot expansion of its nature center—including additional classroom space, new exhibit space, administrative offices, and comfortable indoor restrooms that have their own environmentally friendly wastewater recycling system—Betty was happy to be able to contribute to such a unique and educational project.

Betty also identified with the manner in which Powdermill approached its expansion. “I was taught as a young person to be frugal, and this project doesn’t have a lot of frills. They’re keeping it low key, which I like,” says Betty. “Everything about this project was very pleasing to me and I wanted to be a part of it.”

“...You need world-class amenities like Carnegie Museums to keep young workers here.”

– Raul Valdes-Perez
Raul Valdes-Perez
Raul Valdes-Perez
Raul Valdes-Perez was a doctoral student at Carnegie Mellon University supporting a family on a small monthly stipend when he joined Carnegie Museums in 1988. “I must have thought membership was really important,” laughs the chief executive officer and co-founder of Vivisimo, a Pittsburgh-based software firm and leading provider of enterprise search solutions.

He’s even more confident in its value today, noting that the four museums have been a staple destination for his family of five all these years, and that they continue to visit the museums regularly, especially Carnegie Science Center. “As a scientist myself, I wanted to expose my children to science from an early age,” says Raul. “The Rangos Omnimax Theater is always a treat, especially the nature films that take advantage of the huge format.”

As a businessman, Raul also recognizes the importance of Vivisimo’s corporate membership, both as an employee benefit and as a way to support the work of the museums. “Our employees enjoy the discounts that membership offers,” says Raul. “They are highly educated young people with families—the perfect profile of museum-goers—and this is our way of raising awareness and encouraging them to visit the museums.”

Raul believes the quality of Carnegie Museums helps Vivisimo attract and maintain a talented workforce in an increasingly mobile society. “Clearly, the kind of labor force our company employs can go anywhere,” he says. “Pittsburgh has the universities and great neighborhoods, but you need world-class amenities like Carnegie Museums to keep young workers here and to attract people on the rebound from other cities.”

Mark, Aidan, Pam and Ava (front) Schnurer

“We want to appeal to our children’s sense of intellect … and we see them making connections, becoming interested in science and nature through our visits.”

– Pam Schnurer
When Mark Schnurer was no more than four or five, his favorite activity was to hop a bus with his grandparents bound for Carnegie Museum of Natural History. “I had to visit the dinosaurs, and I loved the exhibit of the mountain lion attacking the man on the camel,” remembers Mark, now a diagnostic radiologist. “There is so much drama in that display, and you have the sense that either side could win.” As a parent, Mark marvels at his own children’s reaction to the same exhibit. “My kids are mesmerized by that scene. It’s probably more than 100 years old and it’s
still powerful.”

Pam Schnurer says that the couple’s five-year-old daughter, Ava, and three-year-old son, Aidan, especially love exploring the Egyptian mummies. “We want to appeal to our children’s sense of intellect, to encourage their curiosity,” says Pam, “and we see them making connections, becoming interested in science and nature through our visits.”

Pam says she and Mark are annual contributors because “the museums provide all generations with something they can appreciate—and we’re happy to preserve that through our support.” Pam, too, gets nostalgic remembering her childhood trips to the museums and says, “Mark and I have such wonderful memories of coming here with our parents. We want the museums to continue so that Ava and Aidan can take their children—our grandchildren—to these wonderful museums as well.”
