Reach Out!

Membership in Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh means so much more than just free admission, discounts, and special offers.  It’s also a great way of connecting with others in the community who share your interests.  Just ask Jacki Mirowitz, chair of Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh’s New Member Outreach Committee.

“Becoming members of Carnegie Museums has given us a heightened sense of belonging to the community,” she says.  Jacki and her family moved from St. Louis, Missouri, last year when her husband Scott was appointed chair of the Department of Radiology at UPMC Health System.  Before moving, they brought their three children to Pittsburgh for an introductory visit.  Among the places they visited was Carnegie Museum of Art, where they toured Aluminum by Design.  “We were very impressed with the exhibition and the museum,” says Jacki.  Adds Scott, “Carnegie Museums is an amazing collection of museums.”  They purchased a Family membership and enjoyed it so much that they upgraded this year to a Reciprocal membership.

Now Jacki is heading up a volunteer committee of members that will reach out to new members of the museums.  The committee will create opportunities for new members to become familiar with the museums and make the most of their membership benefits.  “Our programs will tie in to all of Carnegie Museums’ venues,” she says.  In addition to orienting new members to the offerings of the three museums, the Science Center, and UPMC SportsWorks, Jacki says that activities will range from those for parents and children to those for adults only.  “We are working to satisfy every interest,” she says.

With a master’s degree in Human Resources Management and a bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Jacki is well suited to chair the committee.  She also has 10 years of volunteer experience.  Finally, as a parent, she understands what other parents who are new members expect from Carnegie Museums.

She, Scott, and the children have made many visits to the museums.  Right now, UPMC SportsWorks is the kids’ favorite venue.  “We’ve gone through several member discount coupon books already,” Jacki notes.  UPMC SportsWorks is a great environment for families.  It’s very well supervised.  We don’t have to worry about the kids’ safety, so they get to enjoy some independence.”

Jacki encourages other members of Carnegie Museums to consider volunteering for the New Member Outreach Committee.  “It’s a unique opportunity to share your knowledge and appreciation of the museums with new members.”  To volunteer, please call Elaine London, Volunteer Program Manager, 412.622.3359.
