 MEMBERS AND  DONORS

Getting to know you

Carnegie Museums member Eleanora Thomas places a high value on learning, something she credits to the aunt and uncle who raised her. “I was a depression-era kid,” she says, “but fortunately my aunt and uncle thought culture and education were important. So visits to Carnegie Museums were something we did on the weekends.”

Eleanora Thomas

In her career as a school social worker, Eleanora helped children with behavioral problems and developed teacher-training programs. Now retired, she keeps a hand in the helping profession as a volunteer counselor with the Crisis Response Program at the Mount Lebanon United Presbyterian Church. She is also an ardent traveler and has participated in a number of Elderhostel programs. “Since I’ve retired,” she says, “I think I’m even more interested in learning.”

Home base:  Mount Lebanon

Unusual Trips: Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, Egypt

The Travel Bug:  I think it was seeing the Hall of Architecture as a child that really gave me the itch to see all of these places.

Armchair Trips:  I rarely miss the [Carnegie Museums] Travel Films. If I miss one, it’s because I’m out of town. I enjoy the films of the places that I’ve visited, and I like seeing places that I might like to visit. The Mysteries of Egypt film at the Omnimax Theater is also fabulous.

A Donor Trip to Venice is scheduled for March, 2000

Donor Trip*: Venice and the Veneto, March 9-18, 2000

March is a marvelous time to visit Venice: no “masses” of tourists and fewer pigeons. Peter Lauritzen, an authority on the history and culture of Venice and the Veneto, will lead the group. Lodgings will be at the renovated Hotel Luna, located behind the Piazza San Marco and in operation since 1474. There will be one-day trips out of Venice to visit Palladian villas and to see work by other artists. On these days, lunches will be at villas by invitation of their owners and at the famous Villa Cipriani in Asolo. For more information and an itinerary, call Elizabeth Smith, (412) 622-5774.

* Individuals who contribute $300 or more are eligible to participate in the Donor Travel Program.
